Well… it certainly had lots of pretty colors!
I went into this movie with great expectations based solely on the awards season, and the acceptance speeches from Mr. James Cameron. I found this movie to be disappointing as a whole. I thought Avatar was going to be ground breaking, that when it was over the heavens would part and I would have a brief moment of clarity. What happened was I spent close to 3 hours watching this movie, and when it was over I realized I had basically seen it before. I mean, at least twice during the movie I felt like I was watching a blue version of “Disney’s Pocahontas” or “Dances with Wolves”. I saw pieces of those two films along with others like: “Jurassic Park”, “The Matrix”, and “Alien”. I really expected more of an original story.
I did however enjoy the aesthetic appeal that this movie provides, and it delivers that in spades. This film just keeps on giving, frame after frame there was a visual onslaught of vibrancy.
I enjoyed the score almost as much as the beauty; a great combination, and both were masterfully done. I can honestly see how this movie was such a big success and in many ways it deserves to join the ranks as, “One of the top grossing movies of all time”.
For those of you who don’t know, this movie does have revolutionary 3D. It was shot with multiple cameras at multiple angles. If you missed out on the 3D adventure, you may have to pony up some dough for one of the new 3D T.V.’s to have the adventure at home. But if you want to go all out and buy a new system, there will be a 3D version of the film released on DVD/Blu-Ray in 2011. No news yet on the specs for the 3D DVD/Blu-Ray or an exact release date. There will also be a special edition DVD/Blu-Ray released in November of this year, no specs yet.
Rating: $$$ Worth the money.
